On Tuesday 16th January MPs will debate a motion in Westminster Hall on the impact of junk food marketing on childhood obesity rates. This debate will be led by Maggie Throup MP who is a strong supporter of further action on junk food marketing.
We are keen that OHA members support this debate and encourage MPs to attend and speak in favour of JFM restrictions. Please can you encourage any MPs you have close relationships with or are speaking to, to attend the debate and send them the attached briefing.
If appropriate, please encourage your own MPs to attend the debate. To assist we have put together the attached documents:
- A template email to adapt and send to your members and supporters to encourage them to email their MP
- A briefing paper for MPs
- A template email to MPs from supporters (for your supporters to modify and send to their MP)
- An explanatory cover page which can be modified for any organisations wishing to do their own online campaigning action on their websites (if you have the relevant tools)
Next week will be a busy one from junk food marketing activity. In addition to the debate, we will be holding our OHA parliamentary roundtable on Wednesday. Cancer Research will also be releasing research looking at the impact of HFSS marketing on young people. Please do use all your channels to amplify noise around this issue to help keep it high on the political agenda.
